In a major move, the Government of India has blocked 300 more illegal gambling and betting websites and apps.
This action targets online sports betting platforms, casinos offering slots and roulette, live dealer tables, and peer-to-peer betting marketplaces.
The crackdown also includes satta/matka networks and real-money card and casino game apps.
With this action, the total number of blocked platforms has now reached around 8,400, including 4,900 blocked after the Online Gaming Act came into effect.
What the Law Says
The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, passed on August 21, 2025, aims to protect citizens from predatory online money games while encouraging safe gaming.
The law came into effect on October 1, 2025.
Key points of the legislation include:
Strict penalties for offering or advertising real-money games like poker, rummy, and fantasy sports. Punishments include up to three years in jail and hefty fines.
Creation of the Online Gaming Authority of India to regulate the sector, promote safe e-sports, and prevent stake-based games.
Distinction between safe digital gaming (educational, recreational, or competitive e-sports) and harmful betting platforms.
Why This Crackdown Matters
Illegal online gaming can cause addiction, financial loss, and social distress.
Families have lost savings, young people have become addicted, and in extreme cases, financial stress has even led to suicides.
The World Health Organization recognizes gaming disorder as a serious health condition, marked by loss of control, neglect of daily activities, and continuation despite harmful consequences.
India’s decisive action reflects the government’s commitment to protect citizens and promote responsible digital recreation.
Balancing Safety and Innovation
While cracking down on harmful platforms, the law also supports the legitimate online gaming industry.
It recognizes gaming as a dynamic sector with opportunities for innovation, skill development, employment, and global competitiveness.
Safe e-sports and online educational games are encouraged, while stake-based betting and gambling platforms are strictly prohibited.
This balanced approach ensures that the digital economy grows safely and constructively, separating recreation from exploitative money games.
