Google to End Steam Beta Support on Chromebooks by 2025

Google has announced that Steam beta support for Chromebooks will end completely by December 31, 2025.

Starting January 1, 2026, users will not be able to launch Steam, install new games, or access the platform. Even pre-installed games will be removed automatically.

This marks the conclusion of a beta program launched in 2022, where Google and Steam worked together to bring PC gaming to Chromebooks.

What is Steam?

Steam is the world’s largest PC gaming platform, offering thousands of games for purchase, download, or rental.

Traditionally available on Windows, macOS, and Linux, Steam was brought to ChromeOS through the beta program, allowing 99 selected PC games to be played on Chromebooks. This gave ChromeOS users a taste of high-quality PC gaming.

Impact on Chromebook Gamers

Chromebooks are lightweight, fast devices built mainly for internet use and were not originally able to run high-end PC games.

Steam Beta helped bridge this gap, but with its closure, users will have to rely on Android games from the Google Play Store, which do not include many PC-exclusive titles.

What Happens Next?

Google has already begun sending notifications about the change. Steam Beta will stay active until December 31, 2025.

After that, users who want PC-quality gaming will need to use cloud gaming services like NVIDIA GeForce Now or Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Disappointment for Indian Gamers

In India, Chromebooks are popular among students and light-use customers. Many young gamers enjoyed PC gaming through Steam Beta without investing in costly gaming laptops.

Its shutdown means they may have to switch to Android games or paid cloud gaming platforms—likely increasing both data usage and subscription costs.
