Google Maps Gemini AI lets you Report Accidents and Traffic by Voice

Google has started rolling out Gemini AI in Google Maps, replacing Google Assistant in navigation mode.

First announced earlier this month, Gemini is now appearing for several users on both Android and iOS.

Alongside this, Google has introduced landmark-based navigation and new traffic alerts, though these features are currently available only in the US.

Wider availability is expected over time.

How Gemini Enhances Navigation

With Gemini taking over Assistant’s role, the familiar four-colour microphone icon has been replaced by the Gemini spark symbol.

Users can tap the icon or say “Hey Google” to interact with the AI.

Gemini can provide information on:

Nearby restaurants and popular menu items

Parking options and EV charging stations

Trip-related details and navigation guidance

On Android, the full Gemini experience allows deeper interactions without leaving Maps. Users can:

Connect with other apps

Create calendar events

Summarise emails

Share arrival times with contacts

Gemini also supports contextual and follow-up questions.

For example, users can ask about budget-friendly vegan restaurants along their route and then follow up with parking or navigation questions.

Voice-Based Incident Reporting and Traffic Updates

Gemini in Maps also allows voice-based incident reporting.

Drivers can report accidents, slowdowns, or flooding in real time, helping improve traffic updates for everyone.

Other new features in Google Maps include:

Landmark-Based Navigation: Provides directions using real-world cues like “turn right after the gas station” instead of generic distance prompts.

Currently available in the US.

Traffic Alerts: Notifies users about slowdowns, road closures, and unexpected delays, even for regularly used routes.

Rolling out on Android in the US.

Lens with Gemini: Enhances the Google Lens experience in Maps.

Users can point their camera at a place and ask conversational queries about it.

Available in the US for Android and iOS.
