Android users in India now have access to a life-saving feature that can help emergency responders reach them faster.
Google has activated the Emergency Location Service (ELS) across the country.
This feature allows emergency services to pinpoint a caller’s location with high accuracy, even in places where traditional GPS might struggle.
When you dial an emergency number like 112, ELS automatically shares your precise location with emergency responders, helping them reach you quickly.
Unlike regular location sharing, ELS works indoors and in crowded urban areas using a mix of GPS, Wi-Fi, mobile networks, and device sensors.
How Emergency Location Service Works
Previously, emergency operators relied on cell tower triangulation, which could have errors of several kilometers.
Google’s ELS reduces this margin to just a few meters.
Importantly, ELS is built into Android, not a separate app.
It remains inactive until an emergency call is made.
For privacy, the location is calculated on your device and sent directly to emergency services without passing through Google’s servers.
How to Enable ELS on Your Android Device
Most modern Android phones (Android 4.4 or higher) have ELS enabled by default.
Still, it’s good to double-check:
Open Settings – Go to the “Settings” menu.
Access Safety & Emergency – Scroll and tap on “Safety & Emergency” (or “Location > Advanced” on some devices).
Toggle ELS – Make sure “Emergency Location Service” is switched On.
Add Medical Info & Contacts – Fill in your medical details and emergency contacts.
First responders can access this info even if your phone is locked.
Benefits of ELS for Indian Users
Integrated with 112: Works with India’s all-in-one emergency helpline.
Battery-friendly: Activates only during emergency calls.
Works without internet: Sends location via Data SMS or internet, useful in low-signal areas.
Experts recommend that users still describe their location verbally if possible.
Also, ELS requires Google Play Services to be updated for proper functionality.
Currently, ELS is available for Android 6.0 and newer, starting with the state of Uttar Pradesh, and will gradually expand to more regions.
