If you drive and use a FASTag for toll payments, there’s an important update you can’t ignore.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has made the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) verification mandatory.
If you don’t complete the KYV process by October 31, your FASTag will be deactivated, and you’ll have to pay tolls in cash — double the normal amount.
The government says this step will improve transparency and reduce misuse, but for many vehicle owners, it means one more process to complete.
Why Has NHAI Made KYV Mandatory?
Until now, many people used one FASTag for multiple vehicles or even carried the tag in their pocket while crossing toll plazas.
This caused system errors and revenue leaks.
To prevent this, the NHAI decided that every FASTag must now be linked only to the vehicle it was issued for.
This will stop cases where FASTags meant for heavy vehicles are misused on smaller vehicles and ensure a fair toll collection system.
How to Complete the KYV Process
The KYV process is quite simple and can be done online. You’ll need to upload:
Your vehicle registration certificate (RC)
A valid ID proof (Aadhaar, PAN, or passport)
In some cases, recent photos of your vehicle showing the number plate and FASTag
You can do this on the bank’s website or mobile app through which your FASTag was issued.
Look for the “Know Your Vehicle” or “Update KYV” option, upload your documents, and verify via OTP.
Once done, your FASTag status will show as “Active and Verified.”
If you fail to complete KYV, your FASTag will be automatically blocked, even if there’s money in it.
Many vehicle owners have already faced issues at toll plazas due to incomplete verification.
What the Government Says vs What Users Feel
According to the government, KYV will make the FASTag system more secure, transparent, and efficient.
It will help track stolen or resold vehicles, prevent incorrect toll deductions, and simplify future processes.
However, many people feel it’s an extra burden, comparing it to repeated KYC verifications in banks.
But the reality is simple — if you skip KYV, you’ll have to pay tolls in cash at higher rates.
So, it’s best to finish the verification before October 31 to avoid any travel disruptions.
