If you’ve ever stopped at a toll plaza, seen your FASTag balance is fine, but still heard the machine beep with a voice saying, “Get KYV updated,” you know the frustration.

Long queues, unnecessary calls, and repeated document submissions made toll payments stressful for many drivers.

Now, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has simplified the process for private vehicle owners.

Starting February 1, 2026, new FASTag holders will no longer have to go through the mandatory Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process at toll plazas.

What Has Changed for New FASTag Holders?

Under the new rules, all new FASTags issued for private vehicles—cars, jeeps, and vans—will skip the KYV step.

Earlier, even after a FASTag was activated, vehicle owners were repeatedly asked to submit documents or verification again.

Sometimes, even correct submissions could lead to tag suspension. This problem will now end.

NHAI has clarified that all verifications will now happen before the FASTag is issued.

Banks will check vehicle details using the VAHAN database, and cross-check the Registration Certificate (RC) if needed.

This ensures the tag is correctly linked from the start, reducing delays and paperwork at toll plazas.

When Will KYV Still Be Needed?

KYV is not completely removed.

It will only be required in specific cases:

FASTag attached to the wrong vehicle

Improper tag affixation

Suspected misuse or fraud

Disputes at toll plazas

For normal use, private vehicle owners won’t need to submit documents again, making toll payments faster and hassle-free.

Existing Users and Commercial Vehicles

If you already have a FASTag, nothing changes.

KYV will not be requested unless an issue arises.

For commercial vehicles like trucks, buses, and multi-axle vehicles, the KYV process remains mandatory.

The FASTag requirement itself continues for all vehicles.

NHAI advises everyone to link their FASTag to the correct bank account and mobile number and recharge on time to avoid blacklisting or double tolling.

With these changes, NHAI expects faster toll plaza movement, fewer disputes, and smoother highway travel for private vehicle owners.
