The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has made the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process simpler for FASTag users.
This comes after widespread complaints about the previous system being too complicated and difficult to use.
The announcement was made by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) as part of NHAI’s efforts to improve user experience and prevent misuse of FASTags.
Why KYV Was Introduced
The KYV verification system was launched in late 2024 to curb fraudulent FASTag usage.
Some motorists were using car FASTags on heavy vehicles to evade higher toll charges, while others were carrying tags loosely to use across multiple vehicles.
To enforce the one-vehicle-one-tag rule, users were required to upload:
Vehicle registration certificate
Front and side photographs of the vehicle
FASTag details
However, this process drew criticism for being cumbersome, confusing, and error-prone.
Many drivers reported app crashes, confusing instructions, and even deactivated FASTags at toll plazas due to “non-compliance.”
Simplified Rules for Easier Verification
In response, NHAI has overhauled the KYV process to make it faster and more user-friendly:
Only a front photo of the vehicle showing the number plate and FASTag is required.
Vehicle details can now be fetched automatically from the VAHAN database using vehicle number, chassis number, or mobile number.
Users with multiple vehicles linked to one mobile number can easily select the desired vehicle.
Existing FASTags issued before the KYV mandate will remain active unless there are specific complaints of misuse.
Better Support and Protection for Users
Banks have been instructed not to deactivate FASTags abruptly.
Instead, they must:
Send SMS reminders to users
Assist customers proactively in completing KYV
Contact users directly if there are issues with uploads
Users can also raise queries or complaints through the National Highway Helpline (1033) for any KYV-related problems.
A Step Towards Seamless Tolling
Officials emphasized that the ultimate goal is a fraud-free FASTag ecosystem, especially with India preparing for Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling, where vehicles can pass toll plazas without stopping.
Simplifying KYV is a key step to ensure secure, efficient, and convenient digital tolling for millions of highway users.
