FASTag is mostly used to pay toll tax at toll plazas. But now, it can also be used to pay for parking, traffic challans, insurance premiums, and EV charging.
As per media reports, around 11 crore FASTags have been issued by banks.
The government now plans to make FASTag more useful by allowing it to serve many different purposes at the same time, which will benefit people across the country.
Easier way to manage transport and mobility services
To upgrade FASTag, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and NHAI held a workshop on Wednesday.
This was done in partnership with top officials from the Finance Ministry and fintech companies.
The aim of the workshop was to come up with new ideas for using FASTag and to understand the views of fintech companies.
During the event, discussions were held on how FASTag could be used in more areas beyond just toll plazas and for other services.
Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said that with the support of fintech firms and other stakeholders, the government wants to build FASTag into a powerful tool that not only improves user convenience but also helps manage transport and mobility more easily.

In addition, according to a report by Economic Times, the meeting also covered the ‘Multi Lane Free Flow’ (MLFF) tolling system.
This system allows toll payments without stopping vehicles at toll plazas. It is expected to boost toll collection and help reduce traffic jams at toll points.
