EPFO New Rule: UAN Will Now Be Issued Through Face Authentication

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has announced a major change regarding the Universal Account Number (UAN).

Starting August 1, 2025, UAN will be generated only through Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT) via the UMANG app.

This step aims to make the process more automated, error-free, and reliable.

What is UAN and Why is It Important?

UAN (Universal Account Number) is issued by EPFO to every employee working under the Employees’ Provident Fund Scheme, 1952. It serves as a unique identity for the employee throughout their career.

Each time an employee changes jobs, the new employer assigns a Member ID, which links to the same UAN.

Since UAN is used for life, it is important that it is created correctly and securely.

How Was UAN Generated Earlier?

Earlier, UAN was generated either:

Through the employer, or

By using other digital methods.

However, these methods often led to problems like:

Errors in data entry

Mistakes in identity details

Delays in document verification

To avoid these issues, EPFO is now moving to a more secure and digital approach.

What Is the New UAN Generation Process?

Under the new system:

UAN will be generated only through the UMANG app.

Employees will need to install two apps on their smartphone:

UMANG app

Aadhaar Face RD app

The user’s face will be scanned and matched with the Aadhaar database (UIDAI) for identity verification.

Once verified, UAN will be created instantly.

In a circular dated July 30, 2025, EPFO stated that Aadhaar-based face authentication will be the only method for UAN generation from August 1, 2025.

Exceptions: Who Can Still Use the Old Process?

EPFO has mentioned that the older method through employers will still apply for certain categories, such as:

International workers

Citizens of Nepal and Bhutan

When Was FAT Introduced?

EPFO launched the Face Authentication Technology on April 8, 2025, with three main features added to the UMANG app:

New employees can generate and activate UAN directly from the app.

Existing users can activate their UAN through the app.

Users can access services using face authentication if their UAN is already active.

There is no need to visit any EPFO office or contact an employer. Everything can be done via smartphone.

Benefits of the New UAN Generation System

EPFO says the updated system will offer several advantages:

Faster and easier UAN generation and activation.

All data will be taken directly from Aadhaar (UIDAI), reducing errors.

No need for manual verification or document uploads.

Members can download their e-UAN card in PDF and share it with their employer for PF account setup.

After activation, users can immediately access services like:

Viewing PF passbook

Updating KYC

Submitting claims
