Winter is becoming harsher, and you may be worried that using a geyser or room heater will increase your electricity bills. Similarly, in summer, using air conditioners and coolers can raise costs
But there’s a government scheme that can help solve this problem. The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana can even reduce your electricity bill to zero. The best part is that the government also provides a subsidy for using this scheme.
What is the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?
The scheme was launched in February last year by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Its goal is to install solar panels in 10 million homes by 2027. Under this scheme:
Each participating household receives 300 units of free electricity.
A government subsidy is provided for installing solar panels.
Progress So Far
As of 9th December 2025, the government data shows:
19,45,758 Rooftop Solar Systems (RTS) have been installed.
24,35,196 families are benefiting from these systems.
States with the highest installations:
Gujarat: 4,93,161
Maharashtra: 3,63,811
Uttar Pradesh: 3,02,140
Kerala: 1,69,227
The number of families enjoying zero electricity bills is steadily increasing.
Benefits of the Scheme
The PM Surya Ghar Yojana is especially helpful for families facing high electricity costs. Key benefits include:
One-time investment: Install solar panels once and enjoy zero electricity bills for around 25 years, the average lifespan of these panels.
Government subsidy: Helps reduce the installation cost significantly.
Subsidy Details
| Average Monthly Electricity | Solar Panel Capacity | Subsidy |
|---|---|---|
| 0-150 units | 1-2 kW | ₹30,000-60,000 |
| 150-300 units | 2-3 kW | ₹60,000-78,000 |
| More than 300 units | Above 3 kW | ₹78,000 |
Choosing the Right Solar Panel
Before installing, calculate your daily electricity use and choose panels accordingly.
For example:
A home with 2-3 fans, a refrigerator, 6-8 LED lights, an AC or heater, and a geyser may use 8-10 units per day.
In this case, a 2 kW solar panel is suitable.
Adjust the panel capacity based on your home’s consumption.
