Driving License and RC Now on Your Mobile —Police Will Accept It

In today’s digital world, most people don’t carry paper documents anymore. With digitalization growing, the need to carry physical papers is reducing.

The government is encouraging this change. Apps like DigiLocker and mParivahan are helping people a lot.

You can take a photo of your Aadhaar, Voter ID, PAN card, Driving License, and save them safely in DigiLocker on your phone. This way, you don’t have to worry about carrying or losing physical documents.

Will Police Accept Digital License?

Yes, digital documents are completely valid.

In 2018, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) issued an advisory stating that driving licenses, RC, and other documents shown via DigiLocker or mParivahan are legally valid under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

So, if police stop you, just show your documents on your phone—they must accept them.

This rule is supported by the Information Technology Act, 2000, which considers digital documents equivalent to paper ones.

No Need to Carry Insurance Papers Either

Your vehicle’s insurance info is updated regularly on the VAHAN portal.

The Insurance Information Bureau (IIB) uploads data of new and renewed policies daily, so apps like mParivahan and eChallan show this automatically.

If your vehicle’s insurance is active and visible in the app, you don’t need a physical copy.

How to Add Your Driving License in DigiLocker?

  1. Visit the DigiLocker website (www.digilocker.gov.in) or download the app.

  2. Register with your mobile number and create a username and password.

  3. Link your Aadhaar card.

  4. Go to the Dashboard and click on Issued Documents.

  5. Select Driving Licence from the list.

  6. The app will verify your license with the authorities, then save it in your account.

Now you don’t have to carry physical documents or worry about arguments with the police. Simply show your valid digital documents on your mobile!
