DOR TV Shutdown in India—What About Refunds& Alternatives?

DOR TV Shutdown: An ambitious media-tech project in India has officially come to an end. Streambox Media Private Limited has announced that it has permanently shut down DOR TV and all related services as of May 2025.

India’s First Subscription-Only TV Service Comes to a Halt

DOR TV was launched as India’s first TV service based entirely on subscriptions. Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamat had also invested in this project.

But now, its app, customer support, subscriptions, and services have all been stopped.

The company has clarified that no further payments will be taken from users, and no support, warranty, or software updates will be provided.

Device Will Work Like a Normal Smart TV

The DOR TV device will still function as a regular Smart TV. However, it will no longer have access to DOR TV’s exclusive content or special user interface features.

A Highly Ambitious Project

DOR TV was launched in November 2024 as a premium, subscription-based TV service. It was supported by Micromax Informatics, investor Nikhil Kamat, and Stride Ventures.

The product was first made available on Flipkart, and later through offline distribution channels across India.

What DOR TV Offered

The service provided 4K QLED smart TVs bundled with a single subscription covering:

OTT platforms

Ad-supported video platforms (AVOD)

Live TV channels

Gaming services

News apps

Other digital content

All of this ran on DOR TV OS, a custom operating system developed in India.

The goal was to simplify the viewing experience—no juggling between apps, remotes, or devices.

But despite the innovation, the service could not survive due to high competition and difficulty retaining customers.

What Happens Now for Customers?

DOR TV will continue to work as a normal Smart TV, but:

You will no longer have access to exclusive content

DOR TV’s custom platform and features will be removed

There will be no charges, refunds, support, or updates

What This Shutdown Means

The sudden closure of Streambox Media highlights a key challenge for media-tech startups in India: It takes more than just innovation.

To succeed long-term, startups also need a solid business model, strong content, and loyal customer engagement.
