The Delhi government is all set to roll out its new policy of not supplying fuel to old vehicles in order to fight rising air pollution.
To implement this, a special system has been installed at 477 fuel stations in the city that can check how old a vehicle is. Only 23 fuel stations are left where this system still needs to be installed.
Policy Likely by End of April
A senior official from the Environment Department told PTI that devices have already been installed at 372 petrol pumps and 105 CNG stations.
The remaining stations will be covered in the next 10 to 15 days. The government now plans to fully implement the policy by the end of April.
Originally, this rule was supposed to start from April 1, but due to delays in equipment installation, it had to be pushed back.
Installation Almost Complete
An official stated, “Out of 500 fuel filling stations in Delhi, we’ve finished installing the system at 477. Only 23 are left.”
The progress is being closely monitored by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa. While Minister Sirsa confirmed the delay, he also assured that the work will be completed soon.
What Is the Rule?
According to the policy, fuel will not be given to petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years.
The aim is to reduce emissions from outdated and polluting vehicles.
How Will It Work?
To enforce this rule, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras are being installed at fuel stations.
These cameras will automatically scan your vehicle’s number plate and identify its age based on the registration year.
If a vehicle is found to be older than the allowed limit, it won’t be allowed to refuel.
This move is a big step in Delhi’s fight against air pollution, and once the system is in place at all stations, the rule will be enforced across the city.
