ommuters in Delhi and the NCR may face major travel problems next week as taxi and commercial vehicle driver unions have announced a three-day strike from May 21 to May 23.

The drivers are demanding a fare hike, saying rising fuel prices have made it difficult for them to continue operating under the current rates.

Why Are Drivers Going on Strike?

According to the unions, the prices of CNG, petrol, and diesel have increased sharply over the years, while taxi and auto fares in Delhi-NCR have reportedly remained unchanged for nearly 15 years.

Drivers say the growing cost of fuel, vehicle maintenance, and daily expenses is putting heavy financial pressure on them.

Many claim they are struggling to support their families with the existing fare system.

The All India Motor Transport Congress has already written to Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor and Chief Minister, asking for immediate action and a revision of fares.

Unions Warn of Bigger Protest Ahead

The Chalak Shakti Union has also called for a “chakka jam” protest, urging drivers to keep their vehicles off the roads during the strike period.

Union leaders warned that if the government does not respond soon, the protest could become even stronger in the coming days.

Drivers have also raised concerns against app-based cab companies, accusing them of unfair pricing systems and economic exploitation.

According to them, corporate policies are worsening the financial difficulties faced by drivers.

The unions also referred to earlier observations made by the Delhi High Court regarding drivers’ complaints and fare revision issues.

If the strike goes ahead as planned, thousands of daily commuters across Delhi-NCR are expected to face inconvenience during the three-day protest.
