The Delhi Government has introduced a major rule that will impact businesses using gas cylinders.
From now on, restaurants, shops, and industries in Delhi will not easily get commercial LPG cylinders unless they apply for piped natural gas (PNG).
This move is aimed at promoting cleaner and safer fuel across the city.
LPG Cylinders Now Linked to PNG Application
Under the new rule, businesses like hotels, restaurants, and shops must meet two conditions:
They must be registered with oil marketing companies (OMCs)
They must have applied for a PNG connection
Only after this will they be eligible to receive commercial LPG cylinders.
This decision, implemented by the Food, Supplies, and Consumer Affairs Department on April 2, is meant to encourage a shift from LPG to PNG wherever pipelines are available.
What If PNG Is Not Available in Your Area?
Not all areas have PNG pipelines yet.
In such cases, businesses will still be able to get LPG cylinders—but with a condition.
They must submit a declaration stating they will switch to PNG once it becomes available in their area.
This ensures a gradual and smooth transition without disrupting daily operations.
Data Will Be Shared with IGL
To make sure the rules are followed, oil companies will verify documents before supplying cylinders.
They will also share details of interested consumers with Indraprastha Gas Limited.
This will help speed up PNG connections and improve planning.
The government believes this step will reduce dependence on LPG and promote cleaner fuel usage.
Small LPG Cylinders Still Easily Available
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has highlighted the availability of 5 kg LPG cylinders.
These can be purchased from nearby distributors
Only a valid ID is required
No address proof is needed
Since March 23, around 5.7 lakh cylinders have been sold, showing strong demand. On one day alone, over 71,000 cylinders were purchased.
Focus on Clean Fuel and Better Supply
The government is also working to:
Speed up PNG connections across states
Prevent hoarding and black marketing of LPG
Overall, this new rule is a big step toward cleaner energy and better fuel management in Delhi.
Businesses may need to adjust, but in the long run, it aims to make fuel usage safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly.
