Delhi Government Imposes Strict Pollution Control Measures

To tackle the rising pollution levels in Delhi, the government has announced strict new rules.

Starting November 1, commercial vehicles registered in other states that do not meet BS-VI emission standards will be completely banned from entering Delhi, as per the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM).

According to the Times of India, the Transport Department will deploy special teams at all toll plazas to ensure strict enforcement of this rule.

This ban applies only to commercial trucks from outside Delhi. However, BS-IV diesel vehicles registered in Delhi (valid till October 31, 2026) are still allowed.

There will also be no restrictions on CNG, LNG, or electric vehicles.

Other pollution control measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) will also remain active depending on air quality levels.

During its meeting on October 17, the CAQM approved the entry ban on polluting vehicles.

Officials have been instructed to prevent open burning of garbage and leaves, increase monitoring at construction sites,

and take strict action against polluting vehicles under the Motor Vehicles Act.

Municipal corporations have been asked to enforce pollution control norms and use CCTV cameras for regular surveillance.

Ban on Non-Destination Trucks and Use of Green Power

The government will also ban “non-destination” trucks—vehicles that only pass through Delhi without any business in the city.

Between 2023 and 2024, around 30,472 outbound vehicles were checked at Delhi’s borders, and more than half were turned back for violating pollution norms.

In addition, Delhi will soon receive electricity from a green power transmission line coming from Rajasthan.

This step aims to reduce dependence on thermal power plants and cut pollution levels. A senior official said,

“This move will not only meet the growing energy needs of Delhi’s population but also help in reducing pollution.”
