Delhi is preparing to introduce major changes for e-rickshaw drivers and owners. Due to the rising number of e-rickshaws on roads, traffic congestion,
and frequent rule violations, the Delhi government is bringing a new e-rickshaw policy from May 15.
The government says the new rules are aimed at improving road safety, reducing illegal e-rickshaws, and controlling traffic problems in the capital.
According to Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Singh, buying an e-rickshaw alone will no longer be enough. Drivers will now have to complete training, obtain proper certificates, and follow stricter rules before operating on Delhi roads.
Annual Fitness Certificate Will Be Mandatory
Under the new policy, every e-rickshaw running in Delhi must get a fitness certificate every year. Although this rule already exists, many owners currently ignore it.
The Transport Department believes this move will help identify how many e-rickshaws are legally operating and how many are running without proper approval.
Officials say several e-rickshaws are currently being used without valid documents or technical inspections, which increases the chances of accidents. With stricter fitness checks, illegal vehicles can be identified more easily.
One Person Can Register Only One E-Rickshaw
One of the biggest changes in the new policy is that a person may not be allowed to register more than one e-rickshaw in their name.
The government says this step is being taken to stop the growing system of rented e-rickshaws in Delhi. According to officials, many rented e-rickshaw drivers often ignore traffic rules, leading to accidents and heavy traffic jams.
The government believes that owners will behave more responsibly if they drive their own vehicles themselves.
Under the proposed system, only the person whose name is on the registration will be allowed to drive the e-rickshaw. This could effectively end the practice of renting e-rickshaws to other drivers.
However, companies may get some relaxation. The government is considering allowing businesses to register multiple e-rickshaws under one company name.
Training Will Also Be Compulsory
The Delhi government is also planning mandatory training for new e-rickshaw drivers.
Before registration, drivers will need to complete a 10-day training program conducted by the Transport Department. During the training, drivers will learn about:
Traffic rules
Road safety
Passenger safety
Basic vehicle operations
The government hopes this training will help reduce accidents and improve overall traffic discipline in the city.
Over 2 Lakh E-Rickshaws Running in Delhi
More than 2 lakh e-rickshaws are currently registered in Delhi. They have become an important part of last-mile connectivity for daily commuters.
But with the rapid increase in their numbers, traffic and safety concerns have also grown. Through the new policy, the government now wants tighter monitoring and better regulation of the sector.
What Impact Could the New Rules Have?
The new e-rickshaw policy could bring several major changes:
Illegal e-rickshaws may be removed from roads
Road accidents could decrease
Traffic rule enforcement may improve
Rental e-rickshaw networks could come under control
The Delhi government believes these steps will make roads safer and traffic management more effective in the coming years.
