As Republic Day approaches, security has been increased across the national capital, Delhi. Police and security agencies are on high alert in important and sensitive areas of the city.
Due to Republic Day celebrations, rehearsals, and the air show, authorities have decided to temporarily suspend flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport. This decision may cause inconvenience to passengers traveling during this period.
Flight Operations Suspended for a Few Hours Daily
According to the government’s Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), flight operations at Delhi Airport will be suspended for a few hours every day from January 21 to January 26.
During these six days, no flights will be allowed to take off or land between 10:20 am and 12:45 pm, a total duration of about 145 minutes each day.
This suspension is being enforced for security reasons during Republic Day rehearsals, security drills, flypasts, and air shows.
Peak Travel Hours to Be Affected
The suspension period falls during one of the busiest hours at the airport, when many domestic and international connecting flights operate.
As a result, the restriction is expected to have a direct impact on passengers. This security measure is necessary to keep the airspace completely secure and prevent any risk to VVIP movements
and aircraft involved in the Republic Day ceremony. Such restrictions are imposed every year before Republic Day as part of standard security procedures.
International Flights Also Likely to Face Disruptions
The decision will affect both domestic and international flights. Flights on international routes such as Toronto, Washington, Tashkent, Kathmandu, and Colombo may face delays, rescheduling, or even cancellations.
Passengers may be required to rebook flights and could experience longer waiting times.
Millions of passengers travel through Delhi Airport every day. According to aviation analytics company Cirium, more than 600 flights may be affected during this period.
Additionally, ongoing fog conditions are already causing flight delays, which could further increase inconvenience. Airlines have advised passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport.
