A recent case of credit card fraud has surfaced, emphasizing the increasing threat of cyber scams.
The Cyber Unit of UT Police has lodged a complaint against an unidentified fraudster who scammed Rajesh Kumar, a resident of Sector 31, out of ₹8.69 lakh on December 23, 2024.
Scam Through Fake ID Verification
Rajesh received a call from someone claiming to be an employee of Punjab National Bank (PNB).
The caller requested him to show his American Express and Axis Bank credit cards over a WhatsApp video call for ID verification.
How the Scam Happened

Soon after showing the cards, Rajesh received a link to an application form. When he clicked on it, money began to be deducted from his cards.
A total of ₹8,69,400 was withdrawn from his American Express card in six transactions, and ₹60,000 was taken from his Axis Bank card.
Rajesh quickly reported the fraud, and his cards were deactivated.
Unauthorized Transactions Followed
Soon after displaying his cards, Rajesh received a link to an application form. The moment he clicked on it, money began disappearing from his credit cards.
In six transactions, ₹8,69,400 was debited from his American Express card, while ₹60,000 was withdrawn from his Axis Bank card.
He immediately reported the fraud, and his cards were deactivated.
How to Stay Safe from Such Scams
Never share sensitive card details – Banks never ask for card numbers, IFSC codes, or OTPs. Keep them private.
Be cautious with links – Avoid clicking on unknown links from WhatsApp, SMS, or email. Always use official bank websites.
Enable extra security – Activate transaction alerts and two-factor authentication for additional protection.
Do not show cards on video calls – Avoid sharing QR codes or card details over video calls.
Use virtual credit cards – These help keep your actual card details safe while shopping online.
