CNG and PNG (Piped Natural Gas) have become more expensive in Mumbai.
From Wednesday, Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) increased the price of CNG by Rs 1.5 per kg and PNG by Rs 1 per unit.
The new prices are now Rs 79.50 per kg for CNG and Rs 49 per unit for PNG.
Why Did the Prices Go Up?
According to an MGL official, the price increase was necessary due to rising costs of domestic gas and the strengthening of the rupee against the dollar.
However, the company points out that CNG is still cheaper than petrol and diesel.
Impact on Public Transport
In Mumbai, around 3 lakh autos and 20,000 taxis run on CNG. Additionally, over 5 lakh vehicles use CNG as fuel.
Earlier this year in February, auto and taxi fares were increased by Rs 3. Now, with the new price hike, passengers may face higher transport costs.
Higher Gas Bills for Households
The price increase also affects households, as more than 24 lakh homes in Mumbai use pipe gas.
With the new rates, gas bills will rise slightly each month. Despite the increase, MGL insists that pipe gas remains a safer, more convenient, and environmentally friendly option.
Fourth Price Increase in 6 Months
This is the fourth time in six months that CNG prices have been raised. Previous price hikes occurred in November and December 2024, with the latest one in April 2025.
MGL also mentions that they have 358 CNG stations and are planning to open more to ensure easy access to gas.
