Passports in India are no longer just books with pages—they have gone digital.
The government has launched e-passports that come with an embedded electronic chip storing your identity information securely.
This new technology makes passports more secure, reliable, and globally accepted.
Who Can Apply for an e-Passport?
Any Indian citizen eligible for a regular passport can apply for an e-passport, whether for:
New passport issuance
Passport renewal
Currently, the service is available at select Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs). Before applying, check if your nearest center provides e-passport services.
How to Apply for an e-Passport
The application process is similar to a regular passport:
Register or log in to the Passport Seva portal.
Fill out the online application form for a new passport or renewal.
Book an appointment and pay the applicable fees.
Visit the PSK or POPSK for document verification and biometric capture.
Your e-passport will be delivered to your registered address after processing.
Fees for e-Passports
The fee structure is the same as a regular passport:
36-page booklet: Rs 1,500
60-page booklet: Rs 2,000
Instant services: Additional charges apply
Benefits of an e-Passport
Enhanced Security: The chip stores your photo, fingerprints, and facial recognition data in encrypted form, making it very hard to tamper with.
Faster Immigration: Biometric checks allow quicker clearance at airports.
Global Acceptance: e-Passports meet international standards, improving travel convenience.
The launch of the e-passport is a major upgrade to India’s travel system, offering better security, convenience, and international compatibility for travelers.
