Current Status of India-China Relations

Relations between India and China worsened after military tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh starting in April–May 2020. Some progress has been made with troop disengagements, but the situation remains sensitive.

Ahead of the 2024 BRICS Summit, both countries agreed on new patrolling protocols along the LAC, marking a positive step toward easing tensions. Recently, India has been emphasizing the need to continue reducing tensions.

Global Context and Upcoming Visits

Amid global geopolitical challenges, including efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict and the effects of US tariffs from the Trump era, Jaishankar stressed the importance of strengthening global economic stability.

Wang Yi’s visit comes ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s planned trip to China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin from August 31 to early September.
