There’s an important update for crores of UPI users. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has released new guidelines that will take effect from August 1, 2025.
These changes aim to reduce system overload and keep the UPI network stable, especially during busy hours. The new rules mainly affect balance checks and AutoPay services.
Daily Limit on Balance Checks
Now, users will only be allowed to check their account balance up to 50 times a day. After that, the system will stop responding to balance check requests.
NPCI says many users check their balance too often, which increases pressure on the server.
To help with this, users will now get an automatic balance update after every transaction, so frequent checks won’t be necessary.
Limited Access During Peak Hours
During peak hours — 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM to 9:30 PM — services like balance check may be partially restricted or have limited access.
In addition, UPI AutoPay features (such as subscription payments, EMIs, or SIPs) will be processed only during non-peak hours.
Why the Change?
NPCI explained that these steps are being taken to ensure smooth and stable operations. With UPI transactions rising sharply in recent months, the system has faced more stress.
If millions of users keep checking their balances repeatedly, it affects the overall performance of the network.
No Impact on Key UPI Functions
The good news is that these new limits apply only to some basic services.
Sending and receiving money, scanning QR codes for payment, and other core UPI features will continue to work as usual.
Only secondary features like balance check and autopay are being adjusted to make the UPI system stronger and more reliable.
