Central Govt Offers 42 Days Special Leave for Organ Donors

The central government has introduced a special leave policy for its employees who donate organs.

From 2023 onwards, those who donate organs like kidneys, liver, or any other organ will be granted 42 days of Special Casual Leave (SCL) to help them recover.

This decision was officially confirmed by Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh in the Lok Sabha. The aim is to encourage organ donation and support the noble act of saving lives.

If you’re a central government employee and choose to donate an organ with a generous heart, the government now ensures that you won’t face any issues at work—you’ll get full 42 days of paid leave without any hassle.

Key Details About the Leave Policy

This rule came into effect in 2023, as per an order issued by the Personnel Ministry.

Whether the surgery is big or small, if it’s done on the recommendation of a government-registered doctor, the donor will be eligible for the full 42 days of leave.

The leave period usually starts from the day of hospitalization.

If a doctor advises rest before the operation, the leave can even start up to a week earlier.

Why This Step is Important

Many people hesitate to donate organs due to concerns about their job, salary cuts, or use of medical leave.

Now, the government has clearly stated:
“You show humanity, the government will support you.”

Recovering from organ donation can take time, and returning to work too soon can affect healing.

This new policy gives donors the time and space they need to focus on their health and recovery—without worrying about work pressure.
