Apple is reportedly working on a major upgrade for the Apple Watch, introducing AI-based features and a camera.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, new versions of the Apple Watch, expected by 2027, will include integrated cameras.
This will be a significant shift in how the device interacts with the world around you, providing real-time information straight from your wrist.
Camera in Apple Watch
Apple is planning to embed a camera into the display of the standard Apple Watch model. While details remain unclear, the camera may either be an under-display sensor or a visible cutout.
The Apple Watch Ultra will have a different design, featuring a visible camera module placed next to the Digital Crown, allowing users to point their wrists and scan objects quickly.
These cameras will not be used for selfies or FaceTime calls due to the small screen size.
Instead, the primary goal is to enhance the device’s visual intelligence, enabling it to scan the environment and provide AI-generated information on objects or text when pointed at them.
This feature, which was introduced on the iPhone 16, will make the watch much more interactive.
AI-Based Features
In addition to the camera, Apple is also focusing on improving AI capabilities. The AI features will allow users to get instant information by pointing the watch at objects or text.
The company is also reportedly working on AirPods with built-in infrared cameras to enhance features like spatial audio and gesture-based controls.
This will allow users to interact with AR environments through simple movements like head turns or hand waves.
Apple’s goal is to integrate visual intelligence into its own in-house systems, rather than relying on third-party AI models like ChatGPT.
If successful, these upgrades could make Apple’s wearables significantly more advanced, offering a new level of functionality and interactivity.
