Government telecom company BSNL is preparing to launch its 5G service in Delhi and Mumbai by December 2025.
Customers have been waiting a long time for BSNL’s 4G and 5G networks.
Recently, BSNL even soft-launched 4G in Delhi, and this update comes soon after.
When private telecom companies increased their recharge plans in July, many people switched to BSNL, which helped the company record profits for two straight quarters.
However, due to delays in launching 4G and 5G, BSNL has been losing customers in recent months. This 5G launch could bring relief to many.
Testing of 5G Equipment
According to The New Indian Express, a senior official from the Department of Telecommunications confirmed that testing of BSNL’s domestically made 5G equipment is going smoothly.
The official said, “All the equipment is working perfectly without any issues, so we expect the commercial launch of 5G in both cities by December 2025.”
Progress on 4G Expansion
BSNL recently soft-launched its 4G service in Delhi, and plans to expand it to other cities soon.
The main reason for delays has been BSNL’s focus on developing its own equipment, rather than depending on foreign vendors.
The company aims to provide 4G and 5G services entirely based on Indian-made equipment.
Setting Up 1 Lakh 4G Sites
The government has signed a ₹25,000 crore contract with the TCS-Tejas-C-DoT consortium to set up over 1 lakh 4G sites, which will later be upgraded to 5G.
Equipment supply started in September 2023, and the technology is 5G-ready.
So far, BSNL has already deployed 95,000 4G towers across the country.
