Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), the government-run telecom company, has launched its 5G fixed wireless broadband service.
The new service was introduced in Hyderabad, Telangana, marking the company’s entry into the 5G home broadband space.
Earlier this week, BSNL had revealed the name of its 5G service as Quantum 5G.
While private telecom giants like Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio are already offering fixed wireless access (FWA) services using their 5G networks, BSNL’s version stands out.
BSNL Chairman and Managing Director Robert J Ravi said, “Quantum 5G FWA shows how Indian engineers can deliver world-class connectivity.
This is BSNL’s first custom 5G FWA solution, developed with indigenous technology and without the need for a SIM. We plan to expand this service to more cities and introduce more features soon.”
BSNL 5G FWA Plans and How It Works
According to media reports, the pricing for this new service starts at:
₹999 for 100 Mbps
₹1,499 for 300 Mbps
In this fixed wireless setup, a modem is installed outside the user’s home, and it receives signals wirelessly from the nearest 5G base station.
This setup does not require fiber optic cables, making installation simpler and faster.
BSNL’s Plans for 4G and 5G Expansion
BSNL is also focusing on strengthening its 4G network. The company recently completed the installation of one lakh 4G towers across the country and plans to add another one lakh towers to expand its network further.
Minister of State for Communications Chandrasekhar Pemmasani stated that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will soon seek approval from the Union Cabinet for the next phase of BSNL’s 4G expansion.
He said, “After completing the installation of one lakh towers with indigenous equipment, we will approach the Union Cabinet and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to get approval for one lakh more.”
Alongside this, BSNL also plans to increase equipment and infrastructure for its upcoming 5G services.
Since private telecom companies already have a widespread 5G presence across India, BSNL aims to catch up and compete effectively.
To support these upgrades and expansions, the state-run telecom operator is also exploring asset monetization to improve its cash flow.
