BSNL Introduces Satellite Phone (Price, Features and Rules)

State-owned telecom company BSNL has launched a satellite phone priced at Rs 1.34 lakh.

Unlike a regular smartphone, this device can make calls and send SMS even in places where there is no mobile network.

The phone connects directly to satellites, making it useful in remote villages, border areas, forests, mountains, disaster-hit regions and at sea where mobile towers are unavailable.

Who Is This Satellite Phone Meant For?

The BSNL satellite phone is not designed for everyday users. Instead, it is meant for people who work in areas with little or no network coverage.

It can be used by:

Defence personnel

Disaster response teams

Maritime and shipping operators

Mining companies

Emergency services

Professionals working in remote locations

Adventure travellers and expedition teams

For these users, uninterrupted communication can be crucial for safety and coordination.

Key Features of the BSNL Satellite Phone

The biggest advantage of the device is that it continues to work even when regular mobile networks are unavailable.

Some of its key features include:

Satellite-based voice calling

SMS messaging

SOS emergency communication

Long battery life

Rugged design for harsh environments

Since the phone communicates directly with satellites, it can also remain operational during natural disasters or large-scale network outages.

You Cannot Buy It Like a Regular Mobile Phone

BSNL has made it clear that the satellite phone cannot be purchased directly like a normal smartphone.

Because satellite communication is strictly regulated in India, buyers must first obtain approval from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) before purchasing or using the device.

Using or possessing a satellite phone without the required authorisation may lead to legal action under existing telecom regulations.

A Step Towards Better Connectivity in Remote Areas

With this launch, BSNL aims to improve communication in places where traditional mobile networks cannot reach.

Although the Rs 1.34 lakh price tag makes it unsuitable for most consumers, the device offers a reliable communication solution for critical operations where staying connected can make a significant difference.
