The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is planning to file a legal case against two major e-commerce companies — Amazon and Flipkart.
BIS claims that many products sold on these platforms do not have the required BIS certification. This issue came to light after raids conducted in March 2025.
Raids Conducted in March 2025
In March 2025, two BIS teams raided the warehouses of Amazon and Flipkart. During these raids, thousands of uncertified products were seized under the BIS Act, 2016.
These products were in violation of the Quality Control Order (QCO), which says certain goods cannot be stored or sold without BIS certification.
What Was Found at Amazon’s Warehouse?
Over 3,000 products were seized from Amazon’s warehouse in Chennai.
These included items like insulated flasks, food containers, metallic water bottles, ceiling fans, and toys. The total estimated value of these goods is around ₹36 lakh.
What Was Seized from Flipkart?
From Flipkart, BIS confiscated 286 packs of baby diapers (each containing 42 pieces), 36 casserole boxes, 26 stainless steel bottles, and 10 insulated bottles.
However, BIS has not shared the total value of the goods seized from Flipkart.
Companies May Face Up to 10 Times Penalty
BIS now has the authority to demand compensation up to 10 times the value of the seized goods.
This power is granted under the BIS Act, 2016. In addition, BIS is planning to file a criminal case against both companies in a Magistrate Court.
What Does BIS Do?
BIS works under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs and sets quality standards for products and services in India.
For many product types, having a BIS certification is mandatory. Selling goods without it is seen as risky for customer safety.
Selling Uncertified Goods Is a Legal Offense
BIS has clearly stated that selling products without certification is illegal and directly endangers consumers.
The agency has also said that it may take even stricter steps in the future to send a strong message to online marketplaces.
No Response from Amazon and Flipkart Yet
BIS reached out to Amazon and Flipkart for their comments. However, as of now, no official statements have been released by either company.
