The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) recently conducted raids on Amazon and Flipkart warehouses, recovering thousands of products lacking proper quality certifications, according to the government on Thursday.
Goods Worth Rs 70 Lakh Seized
On March 19, BIS officials carried out a 15-hour raid at Amazon Sellers Pvt Ltd’s warehouse in Mohan Cooperative Industrial Area.
They seized over 3,500 electrical items, including geysers and food mixers, valued at around Rs 70 lakh.
590 Pairs of Shoes Seized
Raids were also conducted at Flipkart’s subsidiary, Instacart Services, where 590 pairs of ‘sports footwear’ were confiscated for lacking the necessary manufacturing marks.
These products were valued at approximately Rs 6 lakh.
Cities Affected by the Raids
These raids are part of BIS’s nationwide initiative to enforce quality standards. Similar actions took place last month in cities such as Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Lucknow, and Sriperumbudur.
The BIS emphasized that these raids are crucial for consumer safety and maintaining product quality.
Mandatory Certification for 769 Product Categories
Currently, 769 product categories in India require mandatory certification from regulatory authorities.
Selling or distributing such products without the correct certification can result in legal consequences, including fines and imprisonment under the BIS Act of 2016. Amazon and Flipkart have yet to comment on the raids.
