Do you use a credit card? If yes, then this update is important for you.

From April 1, 2026, several new rules related to credit cards will come into effect under the Income Tax Act 2025.

These changes aim to increase transparency and keep a closer watch on spending, PAN linking, and high-value transactions.

For regular users, the impact may be limited. But if you spend heavily or travel abroad often, these rules could directly affect you.

High-Value Transactions Will Be Tracked

One of the biggest changes is stricter monitoring of large expenses.

If your annual credit card spending crosses ₹10 lakh, your bank can report it to the Income Tax Department.

Foreign transactions above a certain limit may also come under scrutiny.

If your spending is higher than the income shown in your tax return, you may receive a notice asking for clarification.

PAN Card Linking Becomes Mandatory

From April 1, having a PAN card will be compulsory for all credit card users.

Banks will not issue new credit cards without PAN.

Also, existing cardholders will need to link their cards with PAN.

This means your credit card will now be closely connected to your tax identity.

Company Credit Card Use May Be Taxed

If your company has given you a credit card, this rule is important.

Using a company card for personal expenses like shopping, travel, or entertainment may now be treated as a taxable benefit.

In simple terms, such expenses could be added to your salary and taxed.

You may also need to show bills to prove that expenses were work-related.

Pay Income Tax Using Credit Card

A new option may soon be available for taxpayers.

You could pay your income tax using a credit card instead of net banking or debit cards.

This can be helpful in case of cash shortage. However, be careful—banks may charge processing fees, and interest will apply if you don’t pay the credit card bill on time.

Credit Card Statement as Address Proof

Another useful change is related to documentation.

Your credit card statement can now be used as address proof for PAN card applications or updates, provided it is recent and has the correct address.

This will make the process easier, especially for those who don’t have utility bills or other documents.

These changes clearly show that the government is focusing on better tracking and transparency.

If you are a credit card user, it’s important to stay informed and follow the new rules to avoid any trouble.
