Union Minister for Cooperation Amit Shah has inaugurated Bharat Taxi in New Delhi, marking the launch of India’s first cooperative-driven ride-hailing platform.

The initiative is being seen as a major push to strengthen India’s cooperative movement while offering affordable and people-focused urban transport.

A Driver-First Model With Zero Commission

Unlike private cab aggregators, Bharat Taxi is built around a driver-owned system.

Drivers, called Sarathis, have control over their work, earnings, and daily operations.

The platform follows a zero-commission model, meaning drivers keep their full earnings from each ride.

There is also no surge pricing, ensuring stable and predictable fares for passengers.

This approach aims to move drivers away from aggregator-led systems that often reduce income through high commissions.

Lower Fares and Better Value for Passenger

Passengers are expected to benefit directly from this model.

According to officials, fares on Bharat Taxi can be up to 30 percent cheaper than those offered by private cab services.

Traditional ride-hailing apps usually deduct ₹30–₹50 per trip as commission.

Since Bharat Taxi does not charge any commission, the cost advantage is passed on to riders.

The platform has earlier claimed a network of over four lakh registered drivers, which could help scale services quickly.

Focus on Driver Welfare and Women Participation

The Ministry of Cooperation has highlighted strong welfare measures for drivers.

These include health and accident insurance, retirement benefits, and a dedicated support system.

Special attention is also being given to women drivers through initiatives like Bike Didi.

Under this program, more than 150 women drivers have already joined the service.

Safety Measures for a Secure Ride Experience

Safety has been made a priority on Bharat Taxi.

The platform offers a dedicated customer helpline and has partnered with the Delhi Police to set up 35 special assistance booths.

All drivers go through a verification process, helping ensure safer travel for passengers and quicker resolution of complaints.

Pilot Phase Showed Strong Performance

Bharat Taxi was first tested in December 2025 in Delhi and Gujarat.

During the pilot phase, the platform recorded an average of 5,500 rides per day, with nearly 4,000 airport trips daily.

The performance has encouraged the government to expand the service further.

With its cooperative structure, zero-commission policy, and lower fares, Bharat Taxi is positioning itself as a strong alternative in India’s fast-growing ride-hailing market.
