In a significant development, TF Securities International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed Apple’s ambitious plan to expand iPhone manufacturing in India.
The Cupertino tech giant is not only increasing its iPhone production in India but is also set to launch the highly anticipated iPhone 17, produced entirely on Indian soil, expected to hit global markets in 2025.
This shift is poised to have a profound impact on Apple’s manufacturing operations in China.
A Decline in Chinese Production Predicted
Kuo’s Medium post highlights that Apple’s key manufacturing partner, Foxconn, currently responsible for approximately 80% of iPhone production in India, is poised to reduce production in two regions of China.
This includes a 45% reduction in Zhengzhou and an even more significant 85% decrease in Taiyuan during the upcoming year.
As of now, 14% of iPhone units shipped globally, including the iPhone 15, are manufactured in India, and Kuo predicts that this share will increase to 20-25% by 2024.
iPhone 17: An Indian Innovation
In a groundbreaking move, the iPhone 17 is set to become the first Apple model developed outside China.
Apple is embarking on the New Product Introduction (NPI) process for the iPhone 17 in India, scheduled for the second half of 2024.
This strategic decision is intended to reduce design risks while fostering global competitiveness.
The iPhone 17 is anticipated to make its debut in the international market in the latter half of 2025.
Tata Electronics: Pioneering Indian Assembly
In a recent development, Taiwan’s Wistron approved the sale of its entire indirect stake in Wistron Infocom Manufacturing to Tata Electronics for approximately $125 million (around Rs 1,040 crore).
With this acquisition, Tata Electronics will become the first Indian company to assemble Apple’s iPhone models within the country.
This groundbreaking move is not only strengthening Apple’s ties with the Indian government but is also projected to be a pivotal driver of the company’s growth over the next decade.
Apple’s expansion of its Indian manufacturing operations is a significant step in the tech industry’s global landscape, with India emerging as a crucial hub for iPhone production and innovation.
