Recently, the government reduced GST on around 400 items, including packed milk, lowering it from 5% to 0%. This led many customers to believe that milk prices would drop from September 22.
Some reports even suggested that companies like Amul and Mother Dairy could reduce milk prices by up to ₹4 per liter.
However, Amul has denied these claims, clarifying that the price of fresh pouch milk will remain the same.
What Did Amul Say?
Jayan Mehta, Managing Director of Amul’s parent company Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), explained that GST on fresh pouch milk has always been 0%, so its price will not change.
The recent GST cut applies only to UHT milk (Ultra-High Temperature milk), which will become cheaper from September 22, but pouch milk prices will stay unchanged.
What Is UHT Milk?
UHT milk is heated to about 135°C for a few seconds to kill all harmful bacteria. It is then packed in airtight containers like tetra packs, allowing it to stay fresh for months without refrigeration.
Current Milk Prices
Amul Gold (Full Cream Milk): ₹69 per liter
Amul Toned Milk: ₹57 per liter
Mother Dairy Full Cream Milk: ₹69 per liter
Mother Dairy Toned Milk: ₹57 per liter
Buffalo Milk: ₹75 per liter
Cow Milk: ₹58 per liter
So, only UHT milk will get cheaper from September 22, while the price of fresh pouch milk will remain the same.
