If you use an old Kindle device, this update is important for you. Amazon has announced a major change that will affect many older Kindle e-readers and Fire tablets.

From May 20, 2026, several Kindle Store features will stop working on devices launched in 2012 or earlier. This means users will no longer be able to buy, download, or borrow new e-books directly on these older devices.

Which Kindle Devices Are Affected?

This change will impact many early Kindle models, including:

First Kindle (2007)

Kindle DX and DX Graphite

Kindle Keyboard

Kindle 4 and Kindle 5

Kindle Touch

First-generation Kindle Paperwhite

First-generation Kindle Fire

Kindle Fire 2nd Generation

Kindle Fire HD 7 and Fire HD 8.9

In simple terms, if your Kindle is more than a decade old, it will likely be affected by this update.

What You Can Still Do

There is some relief for users. Books that are already downloaded on your device will continue to work normally.

Also, all your purchased e-books will remain safe. You can access them anytime using:

Kindle mobile app

Kindle Web

A new Kindle device

However, there is one important thing to remember. If you reset or deregister your old Kindle after May 20, 2026, you won’t be able to register it again.

Amazon May Offer Discounts to Upgrade

Amazon will inform affected users through email about these changes. The email will clearly explain what features will stop and what will continue.

To make the transition easier, Amazon may also offer:

Up to 20% discount on new Kindle devices

$20 e-book credit (for a limited time)

If you upgrade and log in with your existing account, all your previously purchased books will automatically appear on your new device.
