Amazon Introduces Passkey Feature for Enhanced Account Security

Amazon has joined the ranks of tech giants such as Apple and Google by introducing the Passkey feature for both browsers and the Amazon Shopping app on iOS.

This feature is designed to provide users with a more convenient and secure method of accessing their Amazon accounts, eliminating the need for traditional passwords.

Customers can now set up a passkey in their Amazon account settings, allowing them to use the same face recognition, fingerprint scanning, or PIN they use to unlock their devices.

Elevating User Convenience and Security

Dave Treadwell, Senior Vice President of E-commerce at Amazon, highlighted the significance of this move, saying, “It’s about giving customers ease of use and security together in their Amazon experience.

While passwords will still exist for the foreseeable future, this is an exciting step in the right direction.

We are thrilled to see the early adoption of this new authentication method, which will help realize our vision for a more secure, password-free Internet.”

Protection from Hackers

Amazon emphasized that Passkey support is available to all Amazon customers using a browser and is gradually being made available on the iOS Amazon Shopping app, with Android support coming soon.

Unlike traditional passwords, passkeys cannot be easily written down or guessed, reducing the risk of inadvertent sharing with malicious actors.

How Passkeys Benefit Users

When a customer uses a passkey on their device, it serves as proof that they possess the device and can unlock it.

With Passkey, customers no longer need to remember complex passwords or rely on easily guessable identifiers like names or birthdays.

Users can employ the passkey to sign in to apps and websites in a manner similar to unlocking their device with a fingerprint, facial recognition, or a lock screen PIN.

Amazon asserts that Passkeys are less vulnerable to phishing attacks compared to traditional passwords and one-time codes sent via text messages, offering a more secure option for account access.
