Airfare to Prayagraj for Maha Kumbh slashed by 50%

Good news for air travelers heading to the Maha Kumbh! Air ticket prices to Prayagraj have now started to decrease.

After a significant rise in fares, the issue was raised in Parliament, leading airline companies to take action.

Since February 1, the fares have dropped by about 50%. For instance, a one-way ticket from Delhi to Prayagraj, which previously cost Rs 39,000, is now available for an average of Rs 10,000.

Rikant Pitti, CEO and co-founder of EaseMyTrip, said that airlines like IndiGo have increased their operations, scheduling around 900 flights for the Maha Kumbh period.

They’ve also adjusted capacities from other routes to meet demand. Though prices depend on availability, this fare reduction provides more affordable options for travelers heading to Prayagraj.

The highest air traffic to Prayagraj comes from Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi.

The average one-way fare when booked 15 days in advance is Rs 16,729 from Bengaluru, Rs 12,751 from Mumbai, and Rs 12,616 from Delhi.

If booked seven days before travel, the fares increase to Rs 22,319 from Bengaluru, Rs 19,659 from Mumbai, and Rs 13,569 from Delhi.

Spot fares from Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi to Prayagraj are Rs 19,334, Rs 15,490, and Rs 4,121, respectively.

In early February, airfares to Prayagraj were 98-210% higher than last year’s fares.

However, the addition of more flights, totaling 132, has helped reduce prices significantly, making travel more affordable for pilgrims and visitors.

According to data from travel platform ixigo, last-minute fares from Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai to Prayagraj were between Rs 13,000-25,000 on February 3, 2025, down from Rs 17,000-33,000 on January 28. Despite this reduction, prices are still higher than last year.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, which began in Prayagraj on January 13, will end on February 26.

Hindus believe that taking a dip at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati during the Mela will wash away their sins and free them from the cycle of birth and death.

During a Rajya Sabha session on February 10, Congress leader Pramod Tiwari pointed out the disparity in airfares, highlighting that the airfare from New Delhi to London was only Rs 23,000, while the fare from Chennai to Prayagraj was Rs 53,000.

Tickets from other cities like Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Kolkata were also similarly high.
