The Tata Group has made a major announcement following the Air India plane crash near Ahmedabad airport on the afternoon of June 12.
N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons—the holding company of the Tata Group—said in a statement that the families of those who died in the accident will receive ₹1 crore as financial support.
He added that the group is deeply saddened by the tragic crash of Air India Flight 171.
Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among those who lost their lives in the crash.
The Air India flight, which was headed to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad airport at 1:38 pm on Thursday. The crash happened in the Meghnani Nagar area, near the airport.
There were 242 people on board, including 10 crew members. Reports say that 241 people died in the crash.
The plane crashed into the hostels and residential quarters used by doctors and staff of BJ Medical College and Sadar Hospital.
A part of the aircraft was lodged into the five-storey building. The impact caused a loud explosion, and both the plane and the building caught fire. Several vehicles, including cars parked in the hospital and college campus, were also burnt.

In a post shared on the Tata Group’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle, N Chandrasekaran said that the sorrow felt due to this incident is beyond words.
He expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and prayers for the injured. He confirmed that Tata Group will provide ₹1 crore to each family of those who died and will also pay for the treatment of the injured.
The statement also said that Tata Group will make sure all the injured receive the care they need.
The group will also help rebuild the hostel at BJ Medical College. Chandrasekaran, who is also the chairman of Air India, added that Tata Group stands with the affected families and communities during this painful time.
Air India Rejoined Tata Group in 2022
Air India was originally launched by JRD Tata in 1932 as Tata Airlines. It became a government-owned company in 1953 when it was nationalized and renamed Air India.
In 2022, the airline was privatized and returned to the Tata Group. Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson said the crash is a difficult time for everyone at Air India.
