NPCI New Guidelines: Inactive UPI IDs to Be Deactivated From December 31

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has issued a crucial circular stating that users with inactive UPI IDs for the past year won’t be able to receive payments through them after December 31.

NPCI Guidelines Ensure User Security

The NPCI, a non-profit organization overseeing India’s retail payment and settlement system, plays a pivotal role in the functioning of apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm.

Acting as a mediator in disputes, NPCI ensures the adherence of these apps to its guidelines.

Rules for UPI Users

In compliance with user security measures, the NPCI has mandated the deactivation of UPI IDs that have remained inactive for a year.

This step aims to prevent potential fraud scenarios where users may create new IDs without delinking their old numbers.

Closing the old ID also minimizes the risk of the user’s old number being assigned to someone else, thereby reducing the likelihood of fraud.

Supreme Court’s Backing

Reinforcing the NPCI’s move, the Supreme Court has recently decreed that telecom providers can deactivate numbers after 90 days of inactivity.

Additionally, these providers have the authority to transfer deactivated numbers to other users.

This aligns with the NPCI’s strategy to enhance security and curb the misuse of inactive UPI IDs.
