The NPS account opening charge is set to change from December 1, 2026, following a revised implementation date announced by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA).
The new schedule allows Points of Presence (PoPs), which help people open and manage National Pension System accounts, to collect a one-time onboarding fee of ₹200 per account.
The regulator issued the latest circular on October 26, postponing the implementation of the revised fee structure that was previously scheduled to take effect earlier.
The change affects the timing of the new charges, while the other provisions of the existing framework remain unchanged
NPS Account Opening Charge: What Changes From December 1?
Under the revised framework, PoPs can collect a one-time onboarding charge of ₹200 for each Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN) opened through their services.
The PRAN is the unique number used to identify an NPS subscriber’s retirement account.
The revised structure also provides for an annual charge of 0.20% of assets under management (AUM), subject to the applicable rules and exemptions.
This charge is adjusted through the scheme’s net asset value (NAV) and paid to the PoP quarterly rather than being collected as a separate annual bill.
Can You Avoid the NPS Onboarding Fee?
The charges depend partly on how a subscriber opens the account. People who complete onboarding through e-NPS and subsequently make contributions through e-NPS or D-Remit are not liable for PoP charges under the prescribed framework.
However, subscribers who originally opened their accounts through a PoP remain liable for the applicable charges even if they later contribute online.
Simply switching to an online contribution method does not automatically remove charges associated with the original onboarding route.
The framework also allows a lower onboarding charge of ₹100 for fully digital, non-face-to-face onboarding where the applicable conditions determined by PFRDA permit it.
This reduced rate should not be assumed to apply automatically to every online NPS account opening.
What NPS Subscribers Should Know Before Opening an Account
The National Pension System is a government-regulated retirement savings scheme that helps subscribers build a retirement corpus through contributions invested in market-linked pension funds.
Accounts can be opened through registered Points of Presence or the online e-NPS platform.
Before opening an account, applicants should check the applicable charges, minimum contribution requirements and available account-opening routes.
Under the revised framework, the minimum contribution at onboarding is ₹250, while subsequent contributions can be as low as ₹10.
Existing subscribers should also review the revised fee schedule published by their PoP.
The regulator has directed PoPs to display the applicable charges on their websites and communicate them during the digital onboarding process.
For people planning to start retirement savings, the key consideration is not just the initial account-opening fee but also the ongoing charges and the route used to open the account.
Checking these details before completing registration can help subscribers understand the costs associated with their NPS account.
