MCD workers’ salary hiked to ₹18,000 plus Dearness Allowance (DA) will bring financial relief to around 4,000 public health workers employed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
The decision raises their minimum monthly salary to ₹18,000, with DA payable separately according to applicable rules.
The announcement was made by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta ahead of Diwali.
The revised salary amount has also been transferred directly to the employees’ bank accounts, according to a report published on October 26, 2026.
The decision is expected to benefit workers who have spent years supporting Delhi’s public health services, including mosquito surveillance, household inspections and public awareness activities.
MCD Workers Salary Hiked to ₹18,000 Plus DA
The salary revision covers approximately 4,000 public health workers employed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
Their minimum monthly salary will now be calculated using the entry-level pay of ₹18,000 under Level 1 of the pay matrix.
In addition to the revised basic salary, eligible employees will receive Dearness Allowance according to the applicable rules.
DA is intended to help employees manage the impact of inflation on their household expenses.
The announcement is significant for workers whose responsibilities have continued over the years despite changes in their job titles.
The revised pay structure is intended to address concerns over compensation and recognise their contribution to essential public services.
The reported decision does not mean that every MCD employee will automatically receive the same salary.
The revision specifically concerns the approximately 4,000 public health workers covered by the announcement.
Who Are the 4,000 Public Health Workers?
These employees were initially recruited as Domestic Breeding Checkers (DBCs).
Their primary responsibility was to monitor and help prevent the spread of mosquitoes associated with dengue in Delhi.
Their duties included visiting residential areas, inspecting premises for mosquito breeding sites and helping raise awareness about disease prevention.
These activities form part of the wider public health efforts required to control mosquito-borne diseases.
Their designation was subsequently changed to Multi-Tasking Staff (Public Health).
Despite the change in designation, they continued performing public health-related duties, including household inspections and awareness work.
The employees have therefore remained involved in activities that support disease prevention and public health monitoring across the city.
The revised salary structure comes against this background of their continuing responsibilities.
How Much Salary Will Employees Receive?
Under the revised arrangement, the minimum monthly salary will be based on ₹18,000 in basic pay under Level 1 of the pay matrix.
Dearness Allowance will be payable separately, subject to the applicable rules and rate.
The actual monthly amount will depend on the DA rate applicable to these employees and any other eligible components of their remuneration.
Therefore, ₹18,000 should not be interpreted as the final take-home salary for every worker.
Dearness Allowance is a component of compensation used to help offset the effect of rising prices.
Its monetary value depends on the applicable percentage and the basic pay on which it is calculated.
For employees receiving DA as a percentage of basic pay, a higher allowance increases the amount paid in addition to basic salary.
However, the exact total should be determined from the relevant salary order and individual pay details.
The reported announcement also stated that the increased salary had been transferred directly to employees’ bank accounts.
Workers can check their salary credits and pay details to confirm the amounts applicable to them.
MCD Announces More Steps Before Diwali
Alongside the salary revision, MCD Mayor Pravesh Wahi announced plans to recruit 2,500 sanitation workers before Diwali.
The proposed recruitment is intended to support cleanliness arrangements across Delhi.
The announcement comes ahead of a period when markets and public spaces generally experience increased footfall during festival preparations.
Maintaining sanitation in busy commercial areas and residential neighbourhoods is an important part of municipal services.
Delhi’s Chief Minister has also directed the civic body to conduct night-time cleaning drives in major markets and residential areas.
The focus is on improving cleanliness and ensuring that waste is cleared from public spaces.
The salary revision for public health workers and the proposed sanitation recruitment are separate measures, but both relate to the delivery of essential civic services.
The immediate salary benefit applies to the public health workers covered by the pay decision.
