WhatsApp Android Support has changed for smartphones running very old operating systems.
WhatsApp now requires Android 6.0 or newer, meaning devices that remain on Android 5.0 or Android 5.1 are no longer supported.
A similar change is coming for iPhone users. From November 30, 2026, WhatsApp will require iOS 15.5 or a newer version on iPhones.
WhatsApp Android Support Now Requires Android 6
Android users should first check which operating system version is installed on their phone.
If the device is already running Android 6.0 or newer, this particular support change should not stop WhatsApp from working.
However, phones that remain on Android 5.0 or Android 5.1 no longer meet the minimum operating system requirement.
Users of such devices should check whether the phone manufacturer has provided a newer Android update.
If Android 6.0 or later is available, installing the system update can bring the device within the supported requirement.
If the device cannot be upgraded beyond Android 5.0 or 5.1, users may eventually need a newer phone to continue using supported versions of WhatsApp.
Updating WhatsApp App Alone Is Not Enough
Users should note that simply installing the latest WhatsApp update or downloading a newer APK will not solve the problem if the phone’s operating system itself is unsupported.
The minimum requirement applies to the Android operating system, not just the version of the WhatsApp application installed on the phone.
Therefore, the first step should be checking whether a system software update is available for the device.
WhatsApp periodically changes its minimum operating system requirements as older platforms become less suitable for supporting newer features and security requirements.
iPhone Users Have Until November 30
iPhone users also need to check their software version. From November 30, 2026, WhatsApp will require iOS 15.5 or newer.
This means iPhones still running versions such as iOS 15.0, 15.1, 15.2, 15.3 or 15.4 will need to be updated before the deadline to meet the new requirement.
If an iPhone supports a newer iOS version, users can install the available software update and continue meeting WhatsApp’s minimum requirement.
For devices that cannot be updated to the required version, continued WhatsApp support may not be available after the deadline.
How to Check Your Phone Software Version
Android users can check the operating system by opening Settings and going to About Phone or About Device. The exact menu name can differ depending on the smartphone brand.
If Android 5.0 or 5.1 appears, users should open the Software Update section and check whether a newer system version is available.
For iPhone users, the installed iOS version can be checked through Settings, General and About. Available updates can be found under Settings, General and Software Update.
The WhatsApp Android Support change mainly affects people still using older devices.
Checking the operating system now can help users determine whether a simple software update is enough or whether their device no longer supports the required version.
