Karnataka DA Hike has brought financial relief to state government employees and pensioners ahead of Diwali, with the state government increasing Dearness Allowance (DA) from 15.75% to 18% of basic pay.

The revised rate represents an increase of 2.25 percentage points and will be applicable retrospectively from July 1, 2026.

The Karnataka Finance Department issued the government order on November 5, 2026. The decision is expected to increase monthly salary payments for eligible employees and pension benefits for retired government staff.

The latest revision is the second DA increase announced by the Karnataka government in 2026. Earlier, in May, the allowance was increased from 14.25% to 15.75% of basic pay.

Karnataka DA Hike: Who Will Benefit?

The revised Dearness Allowance will benefit state government employees receiving salaries under the 2024 Revised State Pay Scales.

The increase also covers eligible state government pensioners and family pensioners.

Employees of aided educational institutions and universities, along with eligible zilla panchayat and work-charged employees drawing regular time-scale salaries, are included under the applicable provisions.

Retired employees receiving pensions under UGC, AICTE and ICAR pay scales are also covered by the revised order.

However, separate government orders will be issued for certain serving employees under UGC, AICTE and ICAR pay scales, as well as judicial officers drawing salaries under the NJPC pay scale.

How Much Will Salary Increase After DA Reaches 18%?

The actual salary increase will depend on an employee’s basic pay. Since DA is calculated as a percentage of basic salary, employees with higher basic pay will receive a larger increase in rupee terms.

For example, consider a Karnataka government employee whose monthly basic pay is Rs 50,000.

Under the earlier DA rate of 15.75%, the employee received Rs 7,875 as Dearness Allowance every month.

With the revised rate of 18%, the monthly DA will increase to Rs 9,000.

This means the employee will receive an additional Rs 1,125 per month before applicable deductions.

ParticularsAmount
Basic PayRs 50,000
Previous DA (15.75%)Rs 7,875
Revised DA (18%)Rs 9,000
Monthly IncreaseRs 1,125

Employees should remember that this is an illustrative calculation. The actual increase will vary according to their basic pay and applicable salary rules.

Karnataka Government Employees to Receive DA Arrears

One important benefit of the announcement is its retrospective implementation. Although the government order was issued in November, the revised DA rate will be effective from July 1, 2026.

Eligible employees and pensioners will therefore be entitled to arrears for the intervening period, subject to their eligibility and the applicable payment instructions.

According to the government order, the arrears will be paid along with the November 2026 salary or pension. The additional amount will not be disbursed before the payment of that month’s salary or pension.

The arrears amount will depend on the employee’s basic pay, pension amount and the period for which the revised allowance is applicable.

For example, an employee receiving Rs 50,000 as basic pay would gain Rs 1,125 in additional monthly DA. The total arrears would depend on the number of eligible months covered by the revised rate.

What Is Dearness Allowance and Why Is It Important?

Dearness Allowance is an additional payment provided to government employees to help them manage the impact of inflation on everyday expenses.

It is calculated as a percentage of an employee’s basic pay. For eligible pensioners, a corresponding benefit known as Dearness Relief is calculated on their basic pension.

Governments periodically revise DA rates to account for changes in the cost of living.

These revisions help employees and pensioners maintain their purchasing power as prices of essential goods and services change.

With Karnataka increasing DA to 18%, eligible employees and retirees will receive higher monthly payments, along with arrears from July 2026 under the revised order.
