Bihar Traffic E-Challan Payment via UPI will become easier from November 16, 2026, as the state Transport Department prepares to introduce a new digital payment facility.
Vehicle owners will be able to pay traffic fines through popular applications such as Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm without visiting transport offices.
The new facility will operate through the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS), which has been developed to simplify digital payments.
The initiative is expected to save motorists time and make the process of clearing traffic fines more convenient.
The department has completed important technical preparations, including API integration through the National Informatics Centre (NIC).
Testing of the platform has also been completed successfully, and officials are preparing to make it operational on the scheduled date.
Bihar Traffic E-Challan Payment via UPI: What’s Changing?
Under the proposed system, vehicle owners will be able to pay their pending traffic challans using their preferred digital payment applications.
Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm are among the payment platforms mentioned by the Transport Department. Internet banking and other supported digital payment channels will also be available.
Currently, motorists can pay e-challans through District Transport Office (DTO) offices, traffic police offices and the existing online e-challan portal.
The introduction of BBPS is intended to provide an additional and simpler payment option. Vehicle owners will no longer need to depend on a particular office or designated payment portal once the new facility becomes operational.
Importantly, the existing payment arrangements will continue. The new system is being introduced to make the available options more convenient rather than replace all existing methods.
BBPS Platform Successfully Tested Before Launch
The Bihar Transport Department has developed the Bharat Bill Payment System platform to connect traffic challan payments with multiple digital payment services.
A demonstration of the platform was conducted at the Transport Department on Thursday. Officials reviewed its functioning and instructed the concerned teams to complete the remaining preparations within the निर्धारित timeline.
The National Informatics Centre has completed the required API integration to connect the BBPS platform with the department’s digital payment infrastructure.
Representatives of the State Bank of India also confirmed that the platform’s testing had been completed successfully.
The facility is being prepared for launch on November 16, 2026. Once it goes live, motorists will be able to use supported payment applications to clear their traffic fines from home.
What Officials Said About the New Payment System
Transport Department Secretary Raj Kumar said that making transport services technology-driven, transparent and accessible to citizens is a priority.
He explained that the BBPS-based facility would allow vehicle owners to pay traffic challans through their preferred digital payment applications without depending on a particular office or portal.
The department also aims to connect more transport-related services with digital platforms so that citizens can access them through simpler payment arrangements.
State Transport Commissioner Arif Ahsan said that the initial facility would focus on traffic challan payments.
Other payment-related services of the Transport Department are also expected to be integrated into the platform in the coming days.
This could eventually make the BBPS platform useful for additional transport-related transactions.
How Will Motorists Benefit From the New System?
The biggest advantage of the new facility will be convenience. Vehicle owners will be able to pay their traffic fines using familiar digital payment applications instead of making separate visits to government offices.
The system is also expected to reduce the difficulties associated with navigating different payment procedures. Motorists will have more flexibility in choosing a supported digital payment method.
Digital transactions can also make it easier for users to retain payment records for future reference. This may help vehicle owners verify whether their challan payments have been completed successfully.
However, motorists should remember that the facility is scheduled to become operational from November 16. Until the official launch, they should continue using the existing authorised payment channels.
Overall, Bihar’s new BBPS initiative is an important step towards simplifying traffic challan payments.
If implemented as scheduled, it will allow vehicle owners to clear their fines more conveniently through digital payment services.
