Traveling with a pet on Indian Railways is set to become easier. The Railways has revised its long-standing rules for transporting dogs, making the journey safer and more comfortable for pets.
Under the new rule, only one dog will be allowed in each dog box on trains. The Railway Board has issued the updated instructions to all railway zones.
One Dog Per Dog Box
Earlier, if separate dog boxes were not available, two or more dogs could be kept together and chained to avoid fights during the journey.
Now, this practice has been discontinued. Only one dog can travel in a single dog box. If a passenger wants to travel with two dogs, both pets must be booked in separate dog boxes.
The revised order has been issued by Rohit Kumar, Joint Director of Passenger Marketing, Railway Board.
Different Rule for Large Dogs
The new rule also clarifies that large dogs cannot be booked in regular dog boxes.
Instead, they will have to travel in a special vehicle, subject to availability. The Railways will continue to charge the same fare that is applicable for transporting horses.
How to Book Your Dog
Passengers travelling in a First AC coupe can book their dogs online.
However, bookings for dog boxes will still have to be made through the offline booking process.
