SBI Customers to Pay Rs 15 for ATM Withdrawals after 4 Free Transactions

SBI customers with certain Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) accounts will see a change in cash withdrawal charges from October 1, 2026.

Under the new rule, eligible customers will continue to get four free cash withdrawals every month through the branch.

However, every withdrawal after the first four will attract a charge of ₹15 plus applicable GST.

Importantly, this rule does not apply to every SBI savings account.

Who Will Be Affected by the New SBI Rule?

The revised charges are specifically for eligible BSBD accounts opened through the branch channel.

BSBD accounts are designed to provide basic banking services without requiring customers to maintain a minimum balance.

For these customers, frequent cash withdrawals at SBI branches could now lead to additional charges.

For example, if you make four branch cash withdrawals in October, there will be no charge under this rule.

But a fifth withdrawal will cost ₹15 plus GST, and a sixth withdrawal will attract another ₹15 plus GST.

So, customers who frequently withdraw small amounts may end up paying more over the course of the month.

The New Rule Starts From October 1

The revised charges will come into effect on October 1, 2026.

This gives customers some time to plan their cash withdrawals.

Instead of making several small withdrawals during the month, eligible customers can consider combining their cash requirements into fewer transactions, wherever practical and safe.

Keeping track of the number of branch withdrawals can also help avoid unexpected charges.

Don’t Confuse This With SBI ATM Charges

One important point is that the new ₹15 charge relates to branch cash withdrawals under the specified BSBD accounts.

It should not be confused with SBI’s separate rules for ATM transactions.

ATM withdrawal limits and charges work differently and can depend on factors such as the type of account, the ATM used and whether the ATM belongs to SBI or another bank.

Therefore, the new October 1 rule does not mean that every SBI customer will automatically be charged ₹15 after four ATM withdrawals.

Digital Payments Are Not Affected

The new charge is also not a fee on regular digital transactions.

Customers can continue using UPI, mobile banking, internet banking and other digital payment methods according to the applicable rules.

For customers who rarely use physical cash, the practical impact of the new SBI rule may therefore be very small.

Why Are Banks Putting More Focus on Digital Payments?

Banks across India are increasingly encouraging customers to use digital payment methods.

UPI, mobile banking and card payments have reduced the need to visit branches for routine transactions.

Physical cash withdrawals, on the other hand, require branch infrastructure and staff support.

By charging for transactions beyond a certain free limit, banks can encourage customers to reduce frequent cash withdrawals and use digital options where possible.

Other Banks Are Also Revising Cash Rules

SBI’s move comes amid broader changes in cash and ATM transaction rules across the banking sector.

Other major banks have also introduced or revised charges and transaction limits for certain types of cash withdrawals.

This means customers should not assume that the same rules apply across all banks.

The exact charges depend on the bank, account type, transaction type and channel used.

How Much Could Frequent Withdrawals Cost?

The ₹15 charge may look small when considered separately, but repeated withdrawals can add up.

For example, if a customer makes 10 chargeable withdrawals beyond the free limit, the basic charges would total ₹150, before applicable GST.

For someone who regularly depends on branch-based cash withdrawals, this could become a noticeable expense over time.

What Should SBI Customers Do?

The most important step is to check your SBI account type.

The new rule is not a universal ₹15 charge for all SBI savings account holders.

It specifically applies to eligible BSBD accounts and additional branch cash withdrawals beyond the four free transactions.

Eligible customers can avoid unnecessary charges by planning withdrawals, keeping track of their monthly transactions and using digital payment methods for routine purchases where convenient.

SBI Rule in Simple Words

From October 1, 2026, eligible SBI BSBD account holders will get four free branch cash withdrawals every month.

After that, every additional withdrawal will cost ₹15 plus applicable GST.

So, before worrying about the new charge, check whether your account is covered by the revised BSBD rule.

Regular SBI savings-account customers should not assume that this particular charge automatically applies to them.
