A big step has been taken to strengthen financial ties between India and Nepal.

Both countries have officially launched the UPI-NPI cross-border remittance system, making digital money transfers faster, safer, and more convenient than ever before.

With India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) now linked to Nepal’s National Payments Interface (NPI), people in both countries can send and receive money instantly through mobile banking apps and digital wallets.

The service was officially launched on June 6, 2026.

Sending Money Home Is Now Much Simpler

This new system is expected to benefit thousands of people who work across the India-Nepal border.

Nepali citizens employed in India and Indians working in Nepal can now transfer money directly to their families without visiting a money transfer agency.

Transactions can be completed within seconds using a smartphone, making the entire process quicker and more convenient.

The move is especially helpful for migrant workers who regularly send money back home.

No More Sharing Bank Account Details

One of the biggest advantages of the new system is improved convenience and security.

Users no longer need to share sensitive information such as bank account numbers or IFSC codes.

Money can be transferred easily using a mobile number, UPI ID, or Virtual Payment Address (VPA).

This reduces the chances of errors and makes digital payments more user-friendly.

Say Goodbye to Carrying Large Amounts of Cash

Because India and Nepal share an open border, many travelers often carried cash while moving between the two countries.

This came with risks such as theft, loss, or damage to the money.

With the launch of digital cross-border payments, people can now transfer funds electronically and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.

As digital adoption increases, travel between the two nations is expected to become more convenient.

Lower Costs and Greater Transparency

Traditional international money transfer methods often involve higher service charges and additional processing fees.

The UPI-NPI system is designed to offer a low-cost and transparent alternative.

Users can send money more affordably while ensuring that the intended recipient receives the funds quickly and securely.

This means more of your hard-earned money reaches its destination.

Good News for Tourists and Business Owners

The benefits of the new payment system are not limited to workers and families.

Tourists traveling between India and Nepal will no longer need to carry large amounts of cash or deal with the hassle of currency exchange for small purchases.

At the same time, shopkeepers and merchants in Nepal can accept digital payments from Indian visitors more easily, reducing their dependence on cash transactions and improving business efficiency.

Nepal Joins the Growing UPI Network

With this launch, Nepal has become one of the countries where Indian travelers can use UPI for seamless digital payments.

Indian users can now make UPI payments in nine countries, including Singapore, UAE, France, Mauritius, Bhutan, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, and Nepal.

The expansion of UPI beyond India’s borders marks another important step in making international digital payments simpler, faster, and more accessible for millions of users.
