India’s luxury rail tourism is getting a major upgrade.
The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has announced the relaunch of the upgraded Golden Chariot luxury train for the 2026–27 tourist season.
The train, known for its royal-style travel experience, is designed to offer a “palace on wheels” journey across some of South India’s most iconic destinations.
With redesigned interiors, modern facilities, and wellness-focused services, the Golden Chariot is aiming to attract both Indian and international luxury travellers.

Why Luxury Trains Still Attract Travellers
Luxury trains remain popular worldwide because they offer a rare combination of:
Slow, scenic travel
Cultural immersion
Premium hospitality
Heritage experiences
Unique storytelling through routes
India is one of the few countries that still operates royal-style luxury trains inspired by its historical kingdoms.
The Golden Chariot itself draws inspiration from the stone chariot of Hampi’s Vittala Temple and was first launched in 2008.
A Bigger Push for Premium Tourism
The relaunch of the Golden Chariot reflects India’s growing focus on high-end tourism experiences.
With increasing global interest in wellness travel, heritage exploration, and luxury journeys, IRCTC is positioning the train as a flagship product for premium travellers.
The goal is clear: to make India’s luxury rail experience a major attraction for both domestic and international tourists in the coming years.
