Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has taken his first major decision after assuming office, bringing good news for lakhs of government employees and pensioners in the state.

The Tamil Nadu government has announced a 2% increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for state government employees and teachers. With this revision, DA has increased from 58% to 60%.

According to the official announcement, the new DA rate will be effective from January 1, 2026.

Lakhs of Employees and Pensioners to Benefit

The DA hike is expected to benefit a large number of:

Government employees

Teachers

Pensioners

Family pensioners

Many employees had been waiting for the latest DA revision, and this decision is expected to provide some financial relief amid rising living costs.

The Tamil Nadu government said it remains committed to the welfare of government staff and retired employees.

Government Expenditure to Increase by ₹1,230 Crore

The state government stated that the DA hike will increase its annual financial burden by around ₹1,230 crore.

Despite the additional expense, the government said it is prioritizing employee welfare and ensuring timely financial support for staff working in different departments.

Government Employees Praised for Welfare Work

In the official release, the government also appreciated the contribution of employees and teachers in implementing welfare schemes across Tamil Nadu.

The statement said government staff play an important role in taking public welfare programmes to the grassroots level and ensuring smooth execution of government schemes.

DA Hike Comes Amid Similar Decisions by Other States

The increase in Dearness Allowance comes at a time when several state governments across India are revising DA rates due to rising inflation and cost-of-living adjustments.

With this latest announcement, Tamil Nadu has joined the list of states providing higher DA benefits to government employees and pensioners.
