Indian travelers have received a big relief. France has removed the requirement of an airport transit visa for Indian citizens.

This means that Indians flying to another country via France will no longer need a special transit visa, as long as they stay inside the international zone of the airport.

The decision was confirmed by the French Embassy in India and came into effect from April 10, 2026.

What Exactly Has Changed?

Earlier, Indian passengers had to apply for an Airport Transit Visa even if they were just changing flights in France.

Now, travelers with ordinary Indian passports can transit through French airports without this extra step. The only condition is that they must not leave the international transit area during their layover.

This change will make international travel smoother and less stressful for many passengers.

Announcement by Emmanuel Macron

The decision was first announced by French President Emmanuel Macron during his visit to India in February 2026.

He had promised to make travel easier for Indian citizens. To make this happen, France updated its old visa rules from 2010 and published the new decree on April 9, 2026. The rule became effective the very next day.

India Welcomes the Move

India has welcomed this decision positively.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that this step shows the strong relationship between India and France. He also highlighted that it will make travel easier and improve people-to-people connections.

The move is part of the growing partnership between the two countries, now called a “Special Global Strategic Partnership.”

What is a Transit Visa?

A transit visa is a short-term visa given to travelers who stop in a country while heading to another destination.

It is only meant for layovers and does not allow you to leave the airport or explore the country.

With France removing this requirement, Indian travelers can now enjoy quicker and more convenient journeys when flying through French airports.
